Young Adult, starring Charlize Theron, Patton Oswalt - Mavis (Charlize Theron) is a ghostwriter for a popular Young Adult series of novels set in a high school. Somehow her life hasn't turned out as she'd hoped when she left her small hometown for the big city of Minneapolis--she has a nice little condo and car, but no steady man in her life and no friends other than her dog. You certainly couldn't describe her as rich or famous.

Receiving a birth announcement from her high school boyfriend (Patrick Wilson) about the arrival of his first child sends her off into a fantasy where he becomes her soulmate, waiting for her to return to rescue him from domestic dullsville and carry him off to the city, just as they planned when they were highschoolers.

She becomes so attached to this fantasy that she decides that it must be true, and heads back to her hometown for a brief but disturbing visit.

From the same writer as Juno. Juno was a dark comedy that worked because Juno herself was a likeable character. Mavis starts out as mean but funny and progresses to sad, pathetic, and mentally ill. The story tries to reclaim mean but funny for her at the end, but I wasn't buying it.
